The newest defense from drug overdose is the nasal spray known as Narcan. Narcan is an emergency medication designed to stop an overdose and potentially save lives.
What is Narcan?
Narcan (naloxone HCl) is a nasal spray used to treat emergency cases of opioid overdose or suspected opioid overdose. It’s an FDA-approved nasal form of naloxone, a medicine used to counter the effects of opioid overdose. When you take opioids, they bind to and activate opioid receptors in the brain, blocking pain, slowing breathing, and having an overall calming effect. But when someone overdoses on opioids, they can stop breathing and become unconscious. Naloxone (including Narcan), essentially, competes with those opioids and kicks them off from the opioid receptors.
What are the Benefits?
Because Narcan is in a nasal spray form, many emergency responders believe it’s easier to deliver on the spot, and also eliminates the risk of contaminated needles. The Surgeon General even issued an advisory saying that naloxone was a critical part of combating the opioid crisis. It should be noted, however, that Narcan is definitely not meant to replace emergency medical attention, even after a patient wakes up from Narcan. Narcan has already saved thousands of lives and stands to save even more as it becomes cheaper to produce.
