Electronic cigarettes are one of the newest trends among teenagers and students. One of the things making this phenomenon so dangerous is the lack of understanding of the effects of e-cigarettes.
How They Work
E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that heat nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals in solution cartridges full of “e-liquid” or “e-juice,” so that users may inhale these chemicals in aerosol form. E-cigarettes are an alternative to smoking cigarettes; however, their relative safety is not fully known. Younger students are being exposed to electronic cigarettes because of their relative availability and perceived safety compared to alcohol and tobacco. E-cigarette inhalants are comprised of vapor as opposed to smoke, however, the contents of the vapor can be harmful.
One of the biggest effects of electronic cigarette use by teenagers is forming an addiction to nicotine. The ‘e-juice’ that is used in e-cigarettes usually contains a high percentage of nicotine. Propylene glycol and glycerol, the major components of e-liquids, are not thought to be dangerous on their own. However, they may decompose when heated by the vaporizer, and be transformed into toxic compounds such as formaldehyde. This is more common with newer vaporizers that use high wattages.
